Insurance Coverage

Vitassium products do not require a prescription. In the U.S., some insurance companies may reimburse you for the cost of Vitassium because it is considered a Medical Food Product. Please check with your individual insurance plan to determine coverage options, as our team cannot advise whether a specific plan covers Vitassium. Here is some information to help you get started:

HSA/FSA

Our website is not set up to accept HSA/FSA cards; however, many Vitassium customers are able to reimburse themselves from their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) account after making a purchase. Check with your insurance or HSA/FSA administrator to determine if medical foods are covered under your specific plan.

One of the most important things you can do for yourself during the reimbursement process is keep detailed records and receipts of your qualified expenses, regardless of whether you plan on reimbursing yourself for it now or later. When you order Vitassium, you'll automatically receive an email with your order confirmation and payment total — be sure to keep this on file for at least three years in case you are ever audited by the IRS. You may even find it helpful to make a spreadsheet to keep track of these expenses.

Additionally, it may help to have your health care provider fill out a Letter of Medical Necessity, which you should also keep on file (see below).

A letter of medical necessity (LOMN) is a document signed by your health care provider, which explains why your provider recommended a specific treatment or product. It demonstrates that your expense is for a medical reason — and not just general health. It may be required by any of the following organizations to receive reimbursement or medical food coverage for products like Vitassium:

  • Flexible spending account (FSA) provider
  • Health savings account (HSA) provider
  • Government health care insurance programs like Medicaid or Medicare
  • Private insurance company

We have provided a template that your provider can use to create a LOMN. You can download the template here. Be sure to keep your LOMN on file in case you ever need to revisit it when engaging with your HSA/FSA or insurance company.
